Basic Electricity Flashcards
What is the most important rule? What are ways you can apply this rule?
Think, test it yourself, don’t depend on the circuit breaker, use gloves.
Why should you work with one hand when possible with electricity?
To prevent a current from flowing between both hands and going through your heart.
How many amperes is considered deadly?
.1- .2 amperes
What type of protection equipment should you have?
Head protection, eye protection, ear protection, gloves, fire-retardant clothing, safety harness
What does DC stand for and what directions does it flow?
Direct current, unidirectional
What does AC stand for and what directions does it flow?
Alternating current, bidirectional, reverses flow
What three elements are in an atom and what are their charges? Where are they all located.
Electron- negative, outside
Proton- positive, nucleus
Neutron- no charge, nucleus
What is a valence electron?
Electrons located in the outer shell
What is a conductor? How many valence electrons?
Material that permits electrons to flow easily. 1-3 valence electrons
What is an insulator? How many valence electrons?
Material that resists the flow of electrons. 7 or 8 valence electrons
What is a semiconductor? How many valence electrons?
Materials that aren’t good conductors or insulators. 4 valence electrons
What is electricity or electrical current?
The flow of electrons
What is the name, abbreviation, and variable for voltage?
Volts, V, E
What is the name, abbreviation, and variable for current?
Amperes, A, I
What is the name, abbreviation, and variable for resistance?
Ohms, Omega, R
