Basic Electrical Theory Flashcards
What are atoms made up of?
Protons (positive)
Neutrons (neutral)
Electrons (negative)
Which way do electrons flow?
Negative (-) to Positive (+)
What are the three main components of an atom?
Protons (positive)
Neutrons (neutral)
Electrons (negative)
In which direction do electrons flow in a circuit?
Negative (-) to Positive (+)
What is the conventional direction of current flow?
Positive (+) to Negative (-)
Difference between a Conductor and an Insulator?
Conductor- Allows current flow
Insulator- Resists current flow
What is the formula for Ohm’s Law?
V = IR
Voltage = Current x Resistance
How does wire thickness affect resistance?
There is higher resistance in thinner or longer wires
What is DC current? How does it flow?
Direct Current- Flows in one direction, powered by Electro-Motive Force (EMF)
What is AC? How does it flow?
Alternating Current- Flows back and forth
