Basic Driving Skills Flashcards
What is the difference between a Special Bus and a Special Activity Bus?
- A special Activiy Bus does not run on a set schedule.
- A special bus seats 10 or fewer, including driver, and is generally adapted for persons with disabilities.
Driving conditions are affected by:
- road conditions
- weather
- lighting
- personal - fatigue, ill
- traffic
- vehicle conditions
If road conditions are less than ideal:
increase your following distance
What is a consideration when following motorcycles?
-Increase following distance as they can stop very quickly.
What are some factors when you drive faster than the flow of traffic?
-You fatigue more quickly
-Less time to make decisions and increase chance of making a WRONG decision
-Less likely to maintain correct following distance
-
Driving at a steady speed is beneficial because:
- It helps environment by burning less fuel
- It saves money by burning less fuel
- Gives you more time to react in an emergency
When should you put a “slow moving vehicle” sign on your vehicle?
When you will be travelling less than 40km/hr
When spotting a potential hazard ahead on the road, what should you do?
Cover the brake pedal with your foot. (being ready to brake.)
As the operator of a large vehicle, you’ll need to consider these two factors
which determine the sharpness of your vehicle’s turn:
- turning radius
- off track
Explain turning radius.
The size of the circle that the vehicle would make if it continued. Thus the curve involved in making a turn.
Explain wheelbase:
The distance between the front wheels and the rear wheels of the vehicle.
Inertia is:
The tendency of a moving object to continue to move forward in a straight line.
When you curve to the right keep your front wheels……
close to the center line. (to prevent the rear of the vehicle from dropping off the shoulder)
When curving to the left…..
keep the front wheels close to the right edge of the road. (to avoid the rear of the vehicle drifting into traffic in the left lane.
When making a right turn what are some things you need to watch out for?
-cyclists, pedestrians, that your wheels don’t go up on a curb, that you won’t hit a light post, that you don’t veer too far into the oncoming traffic lane
