What does driving defensively mean?
At all times the driver should control the vehicle. The driver is responsible for operating it safely.
What are the eight instances in which you should yield right of way?
- Driver who is at or arrives at intersection before you
- Driver on your right if at intersection at same time
- Driver on right at four way intersection with a stop sign
- People still in intersection
-Drivers already on the road as you stop at T-intersection - Other drivers if you approach an intersection with yield sign facing you
- Drivers in opposing traffic lane when you make a left turn.
- Drivers on the road when you are entering from driveway or private road
- Drivers already on highway if on entrance or acceleration ramp
What are the nine conditions which you should reduce your speed?
- Sharp curves or hills
- Slippery roads
- Roads with pedestrians or animals
- Shopping centers, parking lots, and downtown areas
- Heavy traffic
- Narrow bridges and tunnels
- Toll plazas
- Schools, playgrounds and residential areas
- Railroads on the road
How many seconds following distance should you keep from other cars?
3-4 seconds
What side of the center lane should you stay in when driving?
Generally the right side
What are the three acceptable instances not to stay in the same lane?
- Passing another vehicle going in the same direction
- There is a traffic sign or signal saying it is okay to do so
- Something in the way that makes you change position
What are the five things you should do when turning?
Look for signs and signals that say when you can turn
Plan turn before reaching the turning point
Switch on turn signal before getting to turning point
Look at all side of your car to make sure it’s okay to turn
Adjust speed for turns
What 4 steps should you take if you need to make a U-turn?
- Make sure it’s allowed
- Turn on left signal
- Stop and yield to traffic coming toward you
- When way is clear turn into outside or right hand lane
What 4 things must you do when passing vehicles is allowed?
- Estimate time and space needed to pass, make sure not interfering with other vehicle
- Use turn signal
- Leave plenty of space
- See both headlights in rear view before returning to original lane
What side should you generally pass on?
The left side
What two instances where is it okay to pass on the right?
- Other vehicle is about to make a left turn
- On unobstructed road with two or more lanes moving in same direction
What are the 8 times you don’t pass?
- In no passing zone
- When solid yellow line is on your side
- Where there are double solid yellow lines
- When passing will interfere with safety
- When approaching the top of a hill
- When view is obstructed within 100 feet of a bridge, elevated road, or tunnel
- When crossing or within 100 feet of an intersection or railroad crossing
- On shoulder of road
What are the six general parking rules?
- Park in areas clearly meant for parking
- Set your parking brake
- Park as far away as possible from traffic or open roads/as close to curbs
- Place vehicle in gear of it has manual transmission and park if it has automatic transmission.
- Check mirrors and traffic before opening the door and shut it as fast as possible.
