Without teeth
Primary dentition
“baby teeth”, no premolars, 20 teeth, lettered A-E or Palmer classification A-E in quadrants
Primary teeth Eruption
Begins around 8 months with mandibular central incisors, ends at around 29 months with mandibular first molars
Permanent dentition
Adult teeth, 32 teeth, numbered 1-32, erupt from around 6 years with first molars, ends around 21 years with third molars

Mixed Dentition
Primary and Permanent teeth at the same time, from around 6 years to 12 years
Maxillary arch
All of maxillary teeth
Mandibular arch
All of mandibular teeth
Frenulum
Muscle attachements on upper lip, lower lip and bottom of tongue
Apex of tooth
Tip of root
Molar identification
Mandibular molars have 2 roots, maxillary have 3. Mandibular first molar has 5 cusps
Caries
“cavities”, infected tooth structure
Congenitally missing teeth
Teeth that did not form. More often maxillary lateral incisors, mandibular premolars and 3rd molars
Supernumerary teeth
Additional teeth beyond that standard 32.
