What is Active Listening?
Attending to the verbal and nonverbal aspects of communication without judging or evaluating.
What is Paraphrasing?
Restating what the client has said, in slightly different words, to clarify its meaning.
What is Clarifying?
Simplifying the client’s statement by focusing on the core message.
What is Summarizing?
Pulling together the important aspects of an interaction or an entire session.
What is Interpreting?
Offering possible explanations for certain behaviors, feelings, and thoughts.
What is Confronting?
Challenging the client to look at discrepancies between their words and actions, or discrepancies between their words and body language. It points to conflicting information.
How do you support a client?
By providing encouragement and reinforcement.
What is Empathizing?
Identifying with another person by assuming their frame of reference.
What is Modeling?
Demonstrating a desired behavior through actions.
What is Blocking (used in a group setting)?
Intervening to stop unproductive behavior.
