BASIC CONCEPTS Flashcards
Bone surrounds the eyes
Orbit
Fibrous, white part
Sclera
Transparent outer part
Cornea
Sensitive to touch
Dark brown in the eye that absorbs scattered light
Choroid
If separated from retina, it leads to retinal detachment
This secretes aqueous humor
Ciliary body
Increase in aqueous humor can lead to glaucoma
Controls thickness of lens to bend light
Ciliary body
Opacity made can cause cataract
Drains aqueous humor via trabecular mesh work
Canal of Schlemm
If blocked /obstructed, it can lead to Glaucoma
Colored portion of the eye
Iris
Controls the light entering
Pupil
PNS sphincter muscle controls miosis (constriction) — ________________ light
Decreases
Decrease light = pupil constriction
SNS dilation muscle controls midriasis (dilation) — ______________ light
Increases
Increase light = Dilated pupil
Sensory visual layer
Retina
Damaged = blindness
Colored, central vision, day vision
Cones
Dark vision, peripheral vision, night vision
Rods
Controls Blind spot
Optic disk
Central vision
Macula lutea
Damaged= macular degeneration
Sharpest vision
Fovea centralis
Jelly like eye shape at the back
Vitreous humir
Lines in posterior surface of eyelid
Conjunctiva
Jelly like eye shaped in the back
Vitreous humor
Inflammation of the conjunctiva
Conjunctivitis
Aka Pink Eye
Produces tears, drain into the lacrimal sac
Lacrimal gland
Cranial nerves associated with the eyes
Cranial nerves:
II: Optic (Sensory)
III: Oculomotor (Motor)
IV: Trochlear (Motor)
VI: Abducens (Motor)
Cranial nerves:
II: Optic (Sensory) ➡️ visual
III: Oculomotor (Motor) ➡️ moves eyes upwards
IV: Trochlear (Motor)➡️ moves eyes downwards
VI: Abducens (Motor)➡️ moves eyes from side to side
