A collection of requirements that pertain to a specific subject and regulate specific practices.
Code
A written set of regulations that provides the means for exercising reasonable control over construction and is available for adoption by cities, counties, states, or countries with such changes as may be desirable or legal for local needs.
Model Code
A legal document that regulates the construction of structures and buildings. Hammurabi is the earliest known written code of law.
Building Code
States the purpose to be accomplished and allows design engineering professionals to select alternative methods as long as they meet minimum requirements.
Performance Regulations
Describes exactly what methods and materials are to be used, size, location, etc. It’s specific. It limits to a degree the designer’s ability to substitute materials that may be as good as, or better than, those specified in the code.
Prescriptive Regulations
Published technical document that represents industry consensus on how a material/assembly is designed, manufactured, tested or installed as that a specific level of performance is obtained.
Standard
An area or district in a city/town under special restrictions as to the types of buildings that may be erected.
Zone
- The basis for most local zoning ordinances (1924)
- Addresses the need to divide municipalities into districts to help provide for population density, building use, light, ventilation, height, area, etc.
