Basic Chemistry Terminology Flashcards
Ionic Compounds
Are formed once a metal and a non metal combine by the transfer of electrons, which also forms solids.
Molecular Compounds
Form when two nonmetals atoms share electrons, the bond that causes this attraction is called a covalent bond.
Ionic Compounds Characteristics
Metal and Non metal, bond through the transfer of electrons between atoms, has a usually high water solubility and a generally high melting and boiling temperatures. For electrical conductivity it is good when molten or in solution.
Molecular Compounds Characteristics
Non metal only, covalent bond-sharing of electrons, can be a gas, liquid, or solid, water solution is variable, melting and boiling temperature is generally low, while its electrical conductivity is also poor.
Non metal
An element that is not a metal and will share electrons to complete valence electrons shells.
Covalent Bond
A bond in which two non metals share electrons.
