Basic Boat Handling Flashcards
What are the 2 types of stability?
Longitudinal and transverse
What is the force of buoyancy?
Upward force of water displaced by the hull; keeps the boat afloat
What is a righting movement?
Force causing a vessel to react against a roll and return to an even keel
What is set?
The direction the current is flowing
What is drift?
The speed of the current
State the effects of leeway
Leeway can determine how a boat with take wind (sail area vs underwater hull’s lateral resistance)
Definition of cavitation
The formation of a partial vacuum around the propellor blades of a vessel
What causes cavitation?
It occurs when the prop rotates at very high rates of speed or when going from full ahead to full astern
What is slip?
The difference between the theoretical and actual distance travelled by the prop
What is the 50/50 box?
Tool used for determining PPE
water temp and air temp below 50, drysuit with layer 1 and layer 2.
Water temp between 50-60 and air temp above 50, anti exposure coveralls.
Water temp above 60 and air temp above 50, work uniform
