Basic Apparatus Flashcards
ADAPTER
A bent glass tube used to connect the end of a condenser with the receiving vessel.
BALANCE
(Platform type) is used for taking the weight of substances. Set of weights goes with it.
BALANCE
is used for taking the weight of substances. Set of weights goes with it.
BEAKER
A deep cylindrical glass vessel provided with a spout to facilitate pouring. It is used as a container for heating liquids and for preparing solid-liquid mixtures and solutions.
BUNSEN BURNER
A gas burner invented by Robert Bunsen, with an adjustable air supply. It is fed with a mixture of combustible gases through a rubber tubing which is connected to a gas source. It serves to heat substances in proper container.
BURETTE
A long slender, cylindrical graduate used for the precise and accurate measurement of liquids in quantities as small as 1/10 of a milliliter. There are 2 kinds of burettes: the plain and the glass stoppered. Both are used in volumetric analysis.
BURETTE HOLDER
A clamp attached to a burette stand to hold the burette
BURETTE STAND
A stand consisting of an iron rod vertically implanted on a base used to hold the burette in position.
CALCIUM CHLORIDE TUBE
a specially shaped tube which is filled with calcium chloride to absorb moisture from bottles or flask.
CASSEROLE
a shallow porcelain dish similar to the evaporating dish in shape but provided with a handle. Used for heating and evaporating.
CLAMP
A device made of iron which serves to hold firmly the various kinds of glass
apparatus attaching them to the iron stand by means of a clamp holder. Thus a table set-up is maintained.
Made of iron. It connects the clamp to the iron stand.
CLAMP HOLDER
A triangular apparatus used for supporting hot objects such as the porcelain crucible on the iron ring. It is made of special heat-resistant clay to withstand high temperatures during heating.
CLAY TRIANGLE
A device consisting of inner tube in an outer glass jacket used for condensing vapor and cooling it to form a liquid.
CONDENSER –
a thimble-shaped container made of porcelain or metal used to hold
substances subjected to high temperature.
CRUCIBLE
A glass vessel provided with a long neck and side tube outlet used to
hold the liquid mixture during distillation.
DISTILLING FLASK
Used to measure small quantities of liquids counted by drops.
DROPPER
a conical glass vessel with a narrow neck and a wide flat bottom
used as a container for heating liquids.
ERLENMEYER FLASK
a glass vessel with a long neck, a round body and a flat bottom. It has similar uses as the Erlenmeyer flask.
FLORENCE FLASK
A cone shaped device with a long stem. It is used for conveying liquids from one container to another and for filtration purposes.
