Basic acoustics Flashcards

1
Q

what are the 2 different types of waves and what do they have in comparison.

A
  • Transverse: particles move upward and downward in perpendicular motion
  • Longitudinal: particles move forward and backward
  • In both the particles do not travel but the waves do.

2
Q

how are tranverse and longitudinal waves similar to the wave done at sports games

A

particles go up AND down like doing the wave at a game where you stand and sit. The wave is moving but the particles are moving only w/in their own range. So when we speak the air particles push against the other to make the other push and so on, the wave is moving not the particles.

8
Q

what are characteristics of simple waves

A

Frequency - # of times the cycle happens in seconds/ measured in hz
Amplitude - how strong are the oscillations/ measured in dB
phase - when did the wave start/often measured in degrees and relative to another wave.w

9
Q

what is the frequency formula

A

If 1 cycle = 10 ms
- duration of 1 cycle = 10 ms
- 1 sec = 1000 ms
- cycles in 1000 ms = (1000/10) = 100 (hz)
