- Largest base
- Employs 5000 people

- Now the hub of logistics support for the ADF
- Miss Jean Batten landed her solo flight from England in 1935 at the base

- The final northern bare base to be constructed for the RAAF
- Scherger completes a series of strategic outposts reaching from Learmonth in Western Australia to the Cape York Peninsula in Queensland.
- Scherger is designed for operational units to move into existing facilities at little or no notice, in the event of defence requirements or for exercises.

The Russell Offices complex in Canberra contains the administrative headquarters of the Australian Defence Force, and is the home of Air Force Headquarters (AFHQ). Canberra is also home to No 34 Squadron, based at Defence Establishment Fairbairn.
