Basal Ganglia Flashcards
Basal ganglia consists of
the caudate and putamen, also called neostriatum
BG receives input from
All areas of cortex, especially primary motor and somatosensory cortex
Coritcal input provides sensory information and info about
movements planned and executed
Input to putamen is from
Motor areas of brain - pathways are somatotopic throughout loop back to motor cortex
Input to caudate is primarily from
Cognitive and emotional areas of brain
BG also receives input from
substantia nigra, along with areas of cortex, especially Primary and somatosensory cortex
Primary output of BG is
Through thalamus to primary, pre and sup motor areas that form a loop that allows influence of movements controlled by motor cortex based on the integration of sensory and motor input
Primary output of BG is also, along with through thalamus, brain stem nuclei that control
ventrolateral pathways
Two primary pathways in cortex
BG->thalamus->cortex loop
Direct pathways is
excitatory
Indirect pathways is
inhibitory
