Basal Ganglia 1&2 Flashcards
What are the components of the Basal Ganglia?
Caudate, Putamen, Globus Pallidus, Subthalamic Nucleus,Substantia Nigra
Which components of the Basal Ganglia are referred to as the Striatum?
Caudate and Putamen
Which components are referred to as the Lenticular Nucleus?
Putamen and Globus Pallidus
How does information flow through the basal ganglia?
From Cerebral Cortex, Striatum, Output Nuclei to the Thalamus.
Describe what causes the symptoms of Parkinson’s Disease.
Neurons from the Substantia Nigra don’t release enough dopamine. Can be caused via trauma, drug use, manganese poisoning.
What are the signs of Parkinson’s?
Resting Tremor, Cogwheel rigidity, postural instability.
What is the cause of Huntington’s Disease?
Autosomal Dominant disorder, begins at 45. Degeneration of striatum neurons.
