Barton on Sea Flashcards
where is barton on sea
an area located on englands south coast, near bournemouth
what’s is the main problem at barton on sea
coastal erosion
what defences are currently at place and where at??
rock groynes, at hordle cliff near the golf course
what’s three social issues with the management strategies
defence don’t always look natural, they can be obtrusive
building work/carrying out the process can intrude on communities
soft engineering strategies need replenishing often causing disruption
what two issues has christchurch bay suffered from
land slides and cliff collapses
how many meters per year have erosion rates reached at barton on sea
2m
what are 4 residential areas and developments around the bay
highcliffe
barton on sea
milford
christchurch
how does fetch impact christchurch bat
-the full coastline experiences the full
forge of waves brought form the Atlantic so are very powerful, causing major erosion through abrasion and hydraulic action
what are the cliffs surrounding christchurch bay made out of and what did this cause
they’re made from sandstones and clays
these are easily eroded through weathering and the sea
what’s a cliff which is made from clay/sand and describe the major event that happened here
Barton Court (Barton on Sea)
a landslide in 1975, buildings and roads were destroyed even though groynes were already in place
new drainage was added, but this has continued to be damaged by mass movement
what sort of management has been taken place at Highcliffe and have they been successful!
sea defences in place to protect houses, rock groynes were also built
these have been successful as haven’t had to be maintained and small damage to cliffs
it’s also let the beach build up
how has the golf course at Hordle Cliff been soft managed and have these been successful
beach nourishment, and one rock ground too
unsuccessful as beach can’t build up because of ground so waves don’t loose r energy
however successful at keeping beach scoured, can absorb wave energy and protect course
how has the mouth at chewton bunny (between barton on sea and Highcliffe) being managed and has this been successful
cliff regraded and inland stream channelised, this is a conservation area
successful at preventing major erosion and river is still natural, BUT major storm surge damaged the work so this is unsuccessful
how are local residents being impacted by local erosion
decades of erosion has caused the cliff edge to retreat by tens of meters so now residents buildings are very very close to the cliffs, this could end up with people having to be moved away
how much money was spend on sea defences in barton
£4.5 million
