Poor dentition- poorly fitted dentures, dental cavities
Adults who lost teeth or have bad teeth will have impaired chewing
Or having new dentures will make it harder to eat/chew with them
Interventions for poor dentition
do a dental screening when elder pt is admitted to see what can affect their eating
Work with a dietitian or nutritionist to assist with meal planning

Being poor( not having the money to follow a certain diet or buy healthy options) and a lack of access
Lack of money to get healthy foods lead to malnutrition or obesity
Not being able to drive to the store
Food desserts in low-income areas
Interventions for lack of access and being poor
Collab with a dietitian to find alter options
Teach about frozen fruits and veggies
Teach how to read food labels
Talk with social services for food stamps
Cognitive disorders
Dementia, Alzheimer’s can impact nutritional status.
Shopping for food, and selecting foods, and preparing foods are harder
AS cognitive disorders progress refusal to eat or only eat a small group of foods that might not give proper nutrition
Nursing care for cognitive disorders
have pt shop with a friend or have a shopping list
monitor for nutritional deficiencies(vitamins and minerals)
Social worker to have food delivery for pt
Give a small food menu with healthy options
give snacks
cut into small pieces
Altered sensory perception
Poor/altered vision, smell and taste can make it harder for them to eat or feed themselves
Pt might need assistance with shopping and food prep
altered smell= altered taste
Smoking pt will have altered sense of smell
chemo pt will have altered taste
Nursing care for sensory perception
Shop with a friend or have grocery delivered to the house
meal delivery
if they have food aversion eat food cold
eat more spicy or tangy food for pt with altered taste
suck on candies to rid nasty taste in mouth
Have pt avoid eating empty calories
Impaired swallowing
Neuro disorders such as Parkinson’s, cerebral palsy and stroke or surgery on mouth, throat, epiglottis or larynx. Makes it harder to manage food and swallow without choking
At risk for aspiration
oral cancer pt have hard time chewing and making bolus of food before swallowing
partial or total removal of larynx and epiglottis make it easier to aspirate on food and fluid
Nursing care impaired swallowing
always monitor these pt
thicken the foods
