What is Barrett’s Oesophagus?
Replacement of stratifies squamous epithelium by columnar epithelium in the oesophagus
What are the causes of Barrett’s Oesophagus?
Persistent reflux of acid or bile
Expansion of columnar epithelium fro gastric glands or from submucosal glands
Differentiation from oesophageal stem cells
Protective responce
What is a macroscopic sign of Barrett’s Oesophagus?
Red velvety mucosa in the lower oesophagus
What is a microscopic sign of barrett’s oesophagus?
Columnar liner mucosa with intestinal metaplasia
What is Barrett’s Oesophagus a risk factor for?
It is a premalignant condition causing an increased risk of developing dysplasia and carcinoma of the oesophagus
