The orchestra in a concerto grosso.
Basso Continuo
Harmonic structure/ support provided by a chordal instrument along with bass instrument.
Passacaglia
A Theme and Variation above a Ground Bass
Theme and Variation
A clear melody followed by a series of variations.
Ground Bass
A theme in the bass which is repeated many times while the upper parts develop.
Recitative
When words are sung to the natural rhythm of speech.
Performer has freedom and very little accompaniment used.
Aria
Solo song from an opera.
Oratorio
Large scale vocal work based on religious text.
Mostly sung in English.
Da Capo Aria
An aria in Ternary Form
Coloratura
High, fancy singing that includes scales, runs and ornaments.
Baroque Era Mass
Same idea as in Renaissance but featuring accompaniment.
Ritornello
A reoccurring theme in a Baroque piece.
Trill
Rapidly alternating between 2 notes.
Mordent
Play the written note, the note above and back to the main note as quickly as possible.
Acciaccatura
A note crushed in very quickly, either on or just before the beat.
Tierce de Picardie
When a piece of music is in a minor key but has a cadence that finishes on the major version of the chord.
