What is a perfect cadence?
When a melody ends on a route note, sounds complete and finished
What is an imperfect cadence?
When a melody doesn’t resolve, sound incomplete and unfinfished
What does rubato mean?
When the tempo is changed slightly by the performer to add expression to the music
What does ritardando mean?
Gradually getting slower
What does melisma mean?
Singing where there are many notes to a syllable
What does syllabic mean?
Singing where there is only 1 note per syllable
What are ornaments?
They are extra short notes added to decorate the melody
What is a trill?
It is a rapid and repeated movement between 2 adjacent notes
What is a ground bass?
It is a theme in the bass which is repeated many times, while the upper parts are varied
What is an aria?
A song for a solo voice accompanied by an orchestra with either an organ or a harpsichord in the baroque period
What is a SATB chorus?
A chorus with sopranos altos tenors and bass
What are concertos?
Concertos were music written for a single soloist accompanied by an orchestra
They are usually made up from three movements - fast, slow, fast
What does moderato mean?
Moderate pace tempo
What does accelerando mean?
Gradually getting faster
What does rallentando mean?
Gradually getting slower
