Aim
To see if there was a difference between adult and adolescents brains when given a risk taking scenario such as gambling
Method
Quasi experiment- independent measures design
Procedure
Gave Info about income and spending +given 20 dollars to gamble with+called back a week later to use fmri scanner whilst given a risk taking scenario with win loss scenarios On spinner +144 spinners and there were 24 win/win and 24 lose/lose
Sample
19 adults - 11 female 8 male and 22 adolescents 11 female and 11 male
Results
No risk both made similar judgments and both groups had increased expected value- more likely to accept a gamble- Ev had more influence on adolescents - found decreased activity in the amygdala (fear) and insula and increased activity in the medial prefrontal cortex (decision making) and lateral occipital cortex (visual stimuli)
Conclusion
Adolescents place more value on reward than adults
