Barium swallow 3 Flashcards
When should the exposure be made for barium filling film and mucosal relief film?
- Barium filling film: Expose while swallowing (after 3 or 4 swallows).
- Mucosal relief film: Expose immediately after swallowing (while holding breath).
What is the image receptor size for a lateral projection?
5 × 43 cm lengthwise.
How should the patient be positioned for a lateral projection?
Erect with either left or right side in contact with the image receptor.
Both arms flexed and projected backward.
Midcoronal plane centered to the midline of the image receptor.
Neck extended with angles of mandible cleared from the cervical area.
Top of IR 5 cm above the top of the shoulder.
Where should the horizontal CR be directed for a lateral projection?
Perpendicular to the center of IR, 7 cm distal to the jugular notch at T6 level.
When should the exposure be made for barium filling film and mucosal relief film?
- Barium filling film: Expose while swallowing (after 3 or 4 swallows).
- Mucosal relief film: Expose immediately after swallowing (while holding breath).
What should the Barium medium contrast be for a double contrast swallow?
High density, low viscosity (200 to 250%).
How much barium is given for a double contrast swallow?
: 15-20 ml.
What is given after the barium to achieve adequate distension?
Effervescent powder with another mouthful of barium.
What pharmacological agents are used to keep the oesophagus distended?
Buscopan or Glucagon.
