BAP lab 4 - repurposing medicines Flashcards
what is drug repurposing ?
Also known as drug repositioning, re-profiling, re-tasking is a ‘drug development’ strategy predicated on the reuse of existing licensed drugs for new medicalconditions/symptoms.
Achieved by investigation of existing drugs for new or alternative therapeutic purposes – especially in area of rare and neglected diseases
why do we repurpose drugs?
Risk of failure is low as drug already proved to be safe and effective - Shorter time frame to market as all pre-clinical testing already done.
how can we repurpose drugs?
Previously mainly opportunistic – “off target” effect or side effect which is manipulated to become the main, therapeutic effect.
what is the process drug follow fro repurposing?
phenotypic of computational screening data, drug, in silicon screening, in vitro screening and pre clinical trolls, in vivo screening, clinical trolls., PDA approval and successful drug repurposed
what are examples of drug that have been repurposed?
minoxidil
thalidomide
topiramate
raloxifene
sildenafil
