Bank Effects Flashcards

1
Q

Contributing factors for Bank Effects.

A
  • Depth/draft ratio.
  • Depth of water over a bank of greatest influence.
  • Distance between ship and bank of greatest influence.
  • Vessel’s speed.
  • In a canal, the blockage factor.

Q

Navigating within a confined waterway.

A
  • Stay near the centerline.
  • Use rudder to maintain equilibrium if force close to the bank.
  • Use small amounts of rudder.
  • Passing other vessels will magnify the situation.
  • The closer to the bank the greater the effect.
  • Ships with larger beams are more prone to the effect and squat.
  • If situation gets out of control, slow down.

Q

Small vessel being overtaken

A
  • Stay on the centerline for as long as possible.
  • Keep low speed.
  • The smaller vessel will be most effective.
  • Return to the centre of the channel ASAP.

Q

Bernoulli theorem

A

Bernoulli’s principle states that when there is an increase in the speed of a fluid, it simultaneously decreases the static pressure it exerts. Therefore, if there is a faster-moving water between two ships, the water pressure against the side of the ships facing the faster-moving water will decrease.
