Bank Effects Flashcards
1
Q
Contributing factors for Bank Effects.
A
- Depth/draft ratio.
- Depth of water over a bank of greatest influence.
- Distance between ship and bank of greatest influence.
- Vessel’s speed.
- In a canal, the blockage factor.
2
Q
Navigating within a confined waterway.
A
- Stay near the centerline.
- Use rudder to maintain equilibrium if force close to the bank.
- Use small amounts of rudder.
- Passing other vessels will magnify the situation.
- The closer to the bank the greater the effect.
- Ships with larger beams are more prone to the effect and squat.
- If situation gets out of control, slow down.
3
Q
Possible pressure regions
A
4
Q
Ship to ship interaction
A
- Meeting end on
- Overtaking
- Passing
5
Q
Small vessel being overtaken
A
- Stay on the centerline for as long as possible.
- Keep low speed.
- The smaller vessel will be most effective.
- Return to the centre of the channel ASAP.
6
Q
Bernoulli theorem
A
Bernoulli’s principle states that when there is an increase in the speed of a fluid, it simultaneously decreases the static pressure it exerts. Therefore, if there is a faster-moving water between two ships, the water pressure against the side of the ships facing the faster-moving water will decrease.
