Bandura, Ross And Ross Flashcards
What is observational learning?
When we get new behaviours by observing others’ actions and imitating those that receive a social reward.
What is social learning theory?
A way to understand social behaviour by looking at how individuals imitate the actions of others.
What is modelling?
The way that behaviour is changed by observational learning, when participants in a study base their behaviour in the behaviour of a model.
What is the aim of this study?
To see if behaviours learnt by children In one setting could be repeated in another setting if model was not present.
What were the four hypotheses?
- Children who observe an aggressive model will show aggression after seeing the model even if none were seen before. 2. Non aggressive models will inhibit aggression while aggressive models will increase it 3. Same sex models will be imitated more 4.boy are more likely to replicate aggression.
How many participants were there?
- 36 boys, 36 girls
What was the age range and average age of participants?
Aged 37 to 69 months, with an average age of 52 months.
What were the three conditions that the participants were exposed to in the experiment?
Condition 1: child observed aggressive model
Condition 2: child observed non aggressive model
Control group: no model was seen
How many different groups are there altogether?
8 altogether: 6 boys same sex model 6 boys opposite sex model 6 girls same sex model 6 girls same sex model Twice, both for aggressive and non aggressive models.
What are the three independent variables?
The sex of the child, the second of the model, the behaviour of the model
What is the dependent variable?
The behavioural response of the child.
How was the possible confounding variable of the levels of aggression controlled?
Matched pairs design was used so children were matched on their aggression rating.
What was the inter-rater reliability and is this good?
It was v. High (0.89)
What was in the room at stage 1?
Table an chairs with stickers and potato stamps, a table can chair in the corner of the room, tinker toy, a mallet, 1.5 metre bobo
How did the aggressive model show aggression
Posted over bobo doll, sat on it, punched and kicked it, threw it, and hit it on the head with a mallet. Said ‘sick him in the nose’ ‘pow’ ‘hit him down’ he sure is a tough fella’
