Bandaging Flashcards
Layers
1 Wound dressing if appropriate 2 Lotion 3 Stockinette 4 Finger or toe bandages 5 Padding 6 Short stretch bandages
Padding
Protective function
Used to inc pressure in areas (dorsum of foot/hand, fibrosis, scars)
Padding - the denser it is,
the more aggressive
Principles of application
1 Apply multiple bandages of various widths
2 Overlap by 50%
3 Manage tension as you apply (pre stretch 50%)
4 Assure functional mobility
Principles of application - Apply multiple bandages of various widths - how to determine
Size of body part will help determine this
6cm - 12 cm
Instructions to the patient
Remove if painful
Do not add elevation when bandaged
Continue functional activities
Upper extremity - steps
Lotion and stockinette Finger bandages (elastomul, mollelast) Check hand mobility Apply padding to extremity 6 cm SSB at wrist and then move distally Circle MCPs Move up to above wrist Check hand mobility 8 cm SSB starting voer end of the 6cm wrap Move prox in spiral fashion At elbow - crisscross over cubital fossa 10 cm for upper arm Get as high as possible on lateral and posterior upper arm without impeding axilla Secure with tape Check mobility
Upper extremity - Finger bandages
Anchor across carpals
Bandage each finger individually
Limit amount of bandaging to palm
Reinforce MCP
Lower extremity - steps
Lotion and stockinette
Toe bandages (elastomul or mollelast)
Apply padding to extremity - ankle will need extra foam type inserts and padding to distal surface and post aspect of malleoli)
6 or 8 cm SSB at forefoot and move to heel
Use figure 8 moving from distal to proximal
Likely will need more than 1 bandage for foot and ankle to be covered
10cm started at ankle, moving proximal
Secure with tape
Check mobility and pressure
Lower extremity - tow bandages
Anchor across tarsals
Bandage each toe individually, not little toe
