Ballistic terms Flashcards
Define ballistics
The science of the motion of projectiles
Define Line of sight
A straight line between the gun sight and the target
Define Line of elevation
A prolongantion of a line running through the axis of the gun bore
Define Line of departure
A prolongation of a line running through the axis the gun bore as the projectile leaves the muzzle
Define Vertical gun jump
The angle measured in mils, between the line of departure of the projectile and the line and the line of elevation.
Define Trajectory
The path of the projectile from the muzzle of the the weapon to the first target point
Define Range
Weapon to target distance
Define Superelevation
The angle measured in mils, between the line of sight and the line of elevation
DR/DH
Change in range for a 1 mil change in superelevation
DH/DR
change in height for a 100 meter change in range
Drift
The number of miles the projectile moves to the right of the gun target line because of the spin caused by the rifling
Time of flight
The amount of time it takes a projectile to reach a target at a selected range.
10km/h crosswind deflection
This effect of wind deflection assumes a 10km/h cross wind. The correction is applied into the wind. When wind speed is different from 10 km/h the point of aim must be calculated.
Maximum ordinate
The maximum height the projectile travels above the line of sight at a given range.
Range to maximum ordinate
The range at which the projectile is ascending. The range to the maximum ordinate always occur shortly beyond half the target range.
