Q
Balliol’s Rule
A
- Balliols was relatively inexperienced as a politician
- he had not been given the same political instructions on ruling a kingdom than his three older brothers so, he was personally unprepared for the task of being king of Scotland.
- his lack of political experience made it easier for Edward to control him and ultimately express authority over Balliol and the Kingdom of Scotland.

Q
Balliols Rule
A
- Certainly from King Roberts first parliament held in 1309, the general trend has been to blame John for his failure to stand up to Edward, a trend picked up and enthusiastically endorsed by the fourteenth-century chroniclers and subsequent historians.
- Even in hist short reign King John managed to summon annual parliaments.
- He appointed his own Justiciars of Scotland; One for Lothian, one for Galloway and one for Moray.
-He appointed three new sheriffs for the West Coast, extending the long air, of the Scottish King to the nearly independent Western Isles.
-He managed to silence the Bruce faction and keep his own close relations, the powerful Comyn family, happy.
