Arabesque
A pose with one leg stretch straight out to the back and one arm stretched out to the front. Back leg may be on the floor or at 45, 90,or 135°
Allonge
With the arms stretched out as far as possible
A terre
On the ground/ floor
Attitude
Bent hind leg at 90° horizontal to the floor
Barre
Stationary handrail used during Ballet warm-up
Battement
Beating action of extended or bent leg
Grand battement
Large beating action of leg
Petits battements
Small beating action of the leg
Chaine turns
Fast turn on half or full point with legs in a tight first position, rotating Halfturn on 1 foot and a half on the other foot. Chained together turns
Changement
A jump straight up starting from 5th position with one foot in front and landing in 5th position with the other foot in front
Chasse
A glided step. The working leg slides out putting weight on the working leg and draw the other leg along the floor with it
Cou-de-pied, sur le
(On the neck of the foot) a position. A foot is sur le cou-de-pied if it is placed on the calf Just above the ankle. In Russian school, the foot is wrapped around the ankle, with the heel forward and toes back. It may be placed on the front of the calf in this position, at the side or in the back.
Dégagé
Disengaged from the floor
Developpe
Movement in which the working leg is drawn up to the knee of the supporting leg. This action maybe carried out smoothly to a position in the air at 90°
Echappe
A movement in which the legs move from 5th position out to 2nd position, on occasion to 4th
Eleve
Rise from straight legs
En croix
Shape of a cross
En dedans
Movement within a circle so that the leg starts at the back or the side and moves toward the front. For the right leg this is a counterclockwise circle. For the left leg, this is a clockwise circle.
