Q

What is used to check for the amount of contact area between journal and bearing? Describe the method.

A

Dykem, put the bluing on the bearing then put the journal in and tighten to correct clearance, and turn the shaft to see where the Dykem is left then scrape the bearing for proper contact area.

12
Q

Define thrust load

A

It is the function of a thrust bearing to carry the thrust load from the shaft to the frame of the machine where the load can be absorbed and kept from interfering with the internal parts of the machine itself.

15
Q

Explain the bearing designation 6310 SS

A

6 is the type, 3 is series, 10 is ID 10 x 5 mm = 50 mm, SS has to do with the cage, seals, shields, other modifications, and lubrication.

16
Q

what are the three classes of bearing fit

A

Press, push, and slip

17
Q

Define fluting

A

Passing the bearing through a magnetic field

18
Q

List the four types of roller bearings and give a reason why you would use such a bearing.

A

Standard,mill, staggered, and wound type.

19
Q

What is meant by bearing crush and spread and why is it important?

A

Bearing crush refers to the bearing inserts having positive contact with the bearing seat in the housing. The spread is built into the bearing so that the inserts have to be lightly pressed into position.

20
Q

Define spalling

A

Metal fatigue.

21
Q

Explain the difference between a acme rod and nut verses a ball screw.

A

Acme is a plain journal bearing, and roller elements in a ball screw is an axial thrust bearing.

22
Q

What is meant by a recirculating ball bearing?

A

The rollers recirculate, and constantly feeds itself.

23
Q

Define radial load

A

Radial loads are 90 degrees to the shafts axis.

24
Q

Define bearing

A

Support and guide

25
Q

Explain the proper way to fasten a pillow block to the shaft using eccentric locking collars.

A

Take hammer and punch and peen collar then tighten set screw

26
Q

Define false brinnelling

A

All the wear is on one side of the bearing caused by machine movement.

27
Q

Define brinnelling

A

Vibrations of the machine 360 degrees.

28
Q

Describe the 4 methods of checking journal bearing clearance.

A

Feeler, plastic gauge, lead wire, and. Dial indicator.

29
Q

What is the difference between Conrad and Full load bearings?

A

Full has max capacity radial, and Conrad has max radial and axial.

30
Q

List three indicators which tell you a bearing is failing.

A

Temp, noise, and vibration.

31
Q

What type of oil groove should be avoided?

A

Sharp or square grooved.

32
Q

What should the oil level be in a ball bearing?

A

The oil should be just below the center of the bottom rolling element.

33
Q

What temperature is recommended to heat shrink a bearing on a shaft?

A

200-230 degrees

34
Q

What does fixed and floating bearings refer to?

A

The fixed bearing the inner ring is fastened axially to the shaft and the outer ring is held axially in the housing. The floating is just held axially to the shaft.

35
Q

What does the ABEC classification tell you?

A

Tells you the grades of the annular bearing 1-9

36
Q

Name two types of seals and give three advantages or reasons why a particular seal should be used

A

Labyrinth non-contact, high speeds, hot or cold.

Contact seal inside sealing lips, garter spring, has primary and secondary seal to keep out contaminants.

37
Q

List the five methods of oil supply and describe how each work

A

Oil-ring felt washer next the bearing larger than the bearing
Oil-bath 1/3 to 1/2 of the rolling ball element gear box
Wick like a kerosene heater
Splash like a lawn mower gear box
Pressure line straight to the bearing like main bearing in auto.

38
Q

List and draw 3types of self aligning bearings.

A

Single row external, double row internal, and self aligning thrust ball bearing.
