Ball Bearings Test 3 Flashcards
What is used to check for the amount of contact area between journal and bearing? Describe the method.
Dykem, put the bluing on the bearing then put the journal in and tighten to correct clearance, and turn the shaft to see where the Dykem is left then scrape the bearing for proper contact area.
What type of ball bearing is designed to take a radial and axial load but only from one direction?
Combination, angular contact bearing.
Define oil groove.
One of the best methods for providing film lubrication to friction bearings not fed under constant oil pressure.
Define synthetic bearings
Any man made material in bearings i.e. Plastics and Teflon’s etc.
What percentage area of a bearing should contain grease?
1/3 greases level
Define sintered bearing?
A brass or bronze bearing, a poured powdered metal.
What is the advantage of tapered roller bearings?
They can handle high radial and thrust loads .
Define anti-friction bearing?
Support guide and reduce friction of rotating shafts.
Flat and v joint split bearing can handle what degree of load?
120 degrees
When is a two piece inner ring bearing sometimes used?
To increase the radial loads.
Describe the difference between a standard and a precision bearing.
Standard bearings have approximately twice the tolerances of precision bearing.
A gib joint journal bearing can handle what degree of load?
300 degrees
Define thrust load
It is the function of a thrust bearing to carry the thrust load from the shaft to the frame of the machine where the load can be absorbed and kept from interfering with the internal parts of the machine itself.
Define journal bearing
Babbitt, poured bearing.
Define fretting
Where the shaft moves in and out of the bearing.
