  1. Measure the mass of the item
  2. Burn it completely, using the heat energy to heat a known volume of water in a boiling tube
  3. Measure the increase in temperature of the water
  4. apply the formula:
    energy released from food per gram = mass of water x temperature rise x 4.2 / mass of food sample
