Real accounts
Not closed and carry money from one period to the next
Assets are
What a business owns, resources of the business
Define Current Assets
Cash or cash equivalents
And supplies used by the business
How are assets listed?
Liquidity: expected conversion to cash
Property, plant, equipement
Assets used over a long period of time
Define Current Liabilities
Debts that must be paid in one year like accounts payable, short term debt, accrued expenses
How are current liabilities listed?
First to be paid first
Mortgage, long-term debt
Liabilities lasting over the fiscal year
Define Owner’s Equity
“Net Worth”
Owner’s right, claim or interest
= Assets - Liabilities
Define Invested Capital
Cash invested into the business by the owner
Define Retained Earnings
Profits or losses that the business has made during its years of operation
Statement of Retained Earnings
Start with Capital
Add new investmest by the owner and period’s net income
Subtract withdrawals
This equals OE on balance sheet
Owner’s Equity =
Beginning balance + net income + additional investments - withdrawals
Retained Earnings =
Beginning balance + net income - dividends paid
