Balance Flashcards
What 3 main processes does balance rely on
Sensory input from sensory receptors
Central control in CNS and PNS
Motor output with MSK components
Name the 3 types of sensory receptors, and what they sense
Exteroceptive - pain, touch, vibration
Proprioceptive- body position
Interoceptive - vestibular system
What tract does pain follow
Spinothalamic
What tract does proprioception travel up
Dorsal column and spinocerebellar for unconscious proprioception
Describe the vestibular system
System of 3 semi circular canals filled with fluid
Movement of fluid causes hairs to send info via vestibular afferent neurones to vestibular nuclei of the pons and medulla which send info to cerebellum
Where is sensation processed in CNS
Sensory cortex in parietal lobe
Mechanisms of balance
Feedforward- anticipatory
Feedback- reactive
What 3 areas should you assess
Base of support
Centre of gravity
Other sensations
Outcome measures (4)
Berg balance scale
180 degree turn
Functional reach
Timed unsupported steady stand test
