Balance Flashcards
Utricle
Picks up movement side to side
What do ears measure?
Acceleration
What do semicircular canals measure?
Head movement
Anterior
Head motion ‘yes’
Lateral/horizontal
Head motion ‘no’
Ampula
The sacs in the ear where the hair cells are located
Posterior
Head tilt
Endolymph
Fluid in semicircular canal and the cochlear duct and detects motion, high in potassium
Saccule
Picks up movement up and down
Macula
Contains hair cells that pick up motion in the utricle and saccule and
Perilymph
Fluid where the hair cells that detect movement, low potassium, located in the scala tempani & scala vestibuli
Otoliths
Stones in the utricle and saccule resists the fluid motion to stimulate the hair cells in the macula
Mechanoreceptors or hair cells
Detect the movement of the fluid
Cochlea
The sound waves in the fluid into nerve impulses
Oval window
The bones pushing on the oval window to allow the sound to enter the cochlea
