Baddeley et al., 1975) Flashcards
What was the aim of Baddeley et al., 1975
to test the limits of the phonological loop to see how much verbal information it could handle at a time
Describe the method of Baddeley et al., 1975
participants must read lists of 4-8 words
-½ of the lists had short words (one syllable)
-Other ½ of the list had long words (five syllables)
-Lists presented in ascending order
-1.5 second delay between each word
-Participants were given 15 seconds to recall the words in the order they were presented
-Continued until participants failed on all eight sequences
-Thought to indicate the extent of working memory capacity
Result of Baddeley et al., 1975
Word length had a significant impact on memory capacity; participants could recall more of the shorter words & shorter lists
Conclusion of Baddely et al., 1975
Suggests that all inputs were processed in a phonological loop which has limits
2 Strengths from Baddely et al., 1975
Empirical support from dual-task experiment
Dynamic model (not static)
2 Weaknesses frim Baddeley et al.(1975)
Doesn’t account for effects of practice/time
Lacks evidence for how central executive works
