Phage replication (2 ways)

A

1) by multiplying in host cell (lytic growth)
2) intergrating their genome into the bacteria chromosome (lysogenic growth)

Some phages can intergrate in host genome by binding to specific receptor. Phage DNA will then intergrate with bacterial chromosome. This results in induction which induces lytic growth.

There are virulent only capable of lytic growth
Or temperate can undergo lytic or lysogenic growth.

A

Some phages carry genes that convert the host bacterium.

Many bacterial protein toxin genes are carried by converting phages
