Bacteriology Flashcards
Obligate Aerobe
Requires O2 to survive
Facultative anaerobe
Can survive w/ or w/o O2
Obligate anaerobe
Cannot survive in presence of O2
Pathogenicity
Ability of pathogen to produce an infectious disease
Virulence
The degree of pathogenicity.
Infective dose
Amount of pathogenic organism needed to cause infection
Lethal dose
Amount of pathogenic organism need to cause death
Gram (+)
Stains blue
Gram (-)
Stains red/pink
Endotoxin
Components (lipopolysaccharides) of gram negative outer membrane that break free when cell disintegrates. Toxic. Produce fever.
Exotoxin
Proteins secreted by gram (+) and (-) bacteria during rapid cell growth. Highly toxic. Think tetanus toxin.
Which WBC are associated with virus infections. Further, is it indicative of chronic or acute infections.
Lymphocytes
WBC associated with bacterial infection and acute infections.
Neutrophils
