Bacterial Growth Flashcards
Lag phase
The phase in the cycle where no change in cell number occurs
Phases of growth curve of a pure bacterial culture in a closed system:
- Lag phase
- Log/exponential phase
- Stationary phase
- Death/decline phase
Exponential/log phase
Growth occurs at logarithmic rate
Generation time (GT)
Time required for a parent to divide into 2 Daughter cells
Stationary phase
Phase in the cycle after log phase where there is no net increase in cell numbers.
Death phase
After stationary phase. Cell death occurs at logarithmic rate
Bacteria w/ a short mean generation time (generally) produce what type of infection?
Fulminant (rapid) infections
–> high Ag dose
Bacteria w/ a long mean GT generally produce what type of infections?
Chronic infections
–> low Ag dose
Effects of chemotherapeutic agents:
Inhibitors of protein &/or peptidoglycan synthesis are more effective against _________
fast growing bacteria
Slower growing infections are much less active and __________ to target w/ antibiotics
Harder to target
