Bacterial and virus reproduction Flashcards
How often does bacteria reproduce?
Once every 20 minutes or so.
Does bacteria need a partner to reproduce?
No, bacteria divides asexually.
How does bacteria cause damage to the healthy cells around it?
The colony grows and grows and causes damage by crowding out and damaging the healthy cells around it.
At what point does bacteria make us feel ill?
By releasing toxins that cause damage to the surrounding cells and tissues.
What do viruses require to reproduce?
A host cell.
What is a host cell?
A body cell, which will the provide the machinery, and chemicals the virus requires to make copies of itself.
What is insertion?
The virus attaches itself to the cell and injects its genetic material through the injection tube and into the host cell.
What does the virus’ genetic material do once it is inside the host cell?
The genetic material makes multiple copies of itself (replication of DNA inside host cell).
What is cell lysis?
When the cell breaks. The host cell bursts, releasing all the viruses. (Each virus will then start another round of replication inside another shot cell.)
At what point do we start to feel ill?
When our cells become damaged.
What do toxins and cell damage do?
Give rise to symptoms of a disease.
