Bacteria - Week 2 PBL Flashcards
What is light microscopy?
Using microscopes and bright fields to examine cultures and motility of organisms
What is gram staining?
Observe gram pos (stains violet; thick peptidoglycan layer) and neg (stains red; thinner peptidoglycan layer).
What is traditional culture?
The cultivation of microorganisms for analysis
What are the four stages to PCR?
1) denaturation - heat tube
2) annealing - cool tube, DNA polymerase binds primers and adds nucleotides to template strand
3) extension- new complementary DNA strand
4) electrophoresis analysis
What is serology?
Immunoassays for antigen conc measurement
5 key features of bacteria:
Long circular DNA
Thick capsule
Flagellum
Binary fission reproduction
Cell wall (peptidoglycan)
What is the name of spherical bacteria?
An example and gram type
Cocci
Streptococcus pneumoniae
Gram pos
What is the name of rod shaped bacteria?
Example and gram type (x2)
Bacilli
Bacillus cereus
Gram pos
E. coli
Gram neg
What is the name for spiral shaped bacteria?
Example and gram type
spirochaetes
Helicobacter pylori
Gram neg
What is the name for common shaped bacteria?
Example and gram type
Vibrios
Vibrio cholerae
Gram neg
What is the chain of infection and why is it important ?
Its how communicable diseases spread
(Host/infectious agent/reservoir/exit/transmission/ entry)
