Bacteria/Viruses Vocab Flashcards
Virus
A non living infectious particle composed of a nuclei acid and a protein
Capsid
A protein sheath that surrounds the nucleic acid core in a virus
Bacteriophage
A virus that infects bacteria
Lytic infection
A method of viral replication that results in the destruction of a host cell and the release of many new virus particles
Lysogenic infection
A method of viral replication in which a viral genome is replaced as a provirus without destroying the host cell
Prophage
The viral genome (DNA) of a bacteriophage that has entered a bacterial cell, attached to the bacterial chromosome
Endosphere
Contains DNA; is the thick coated, resistant structure (in unfavorable environmental conditions)
Eukaryote
an organism made up of cells that have a nucleus enclosed by a membrane, multiple chromosomes, and a mitotic cycle
Retrovirus
Contain enzyme reverse transcriptase, reverses the normal process of transcription
Bacillus
Rod shaped bacterium
Prokaryote
A single-called organism that has no nucleus and has no membrane-bound organelles
Spirillium
a spiral shaped bacterium
Binary fission
Two identical cells
Conjugation
Exchange of DNA between prokaryotes
Coccus
A sphere shaped bacterium
