Bacteria Chapter 1: Intro Flashcards
What is pathogenicity?
ability of bacterium to cause disease
qualitative concept
What is a pathogen?
bacterium that is capable of harming a normal host – does not always cause harm
ie. Mycobacterium tuberculosis
What is an opportunistic pathogen?
bacterium that harms a compromised host
ie. Pseudomonas aeruginosa
What is virulence?
measure of the pathogenicity of a microorganism
quantitative concept
How is virulence expressed?
cell number that will elicit pathogenic response in the host within a given time period
ie. need less of highly virulent organism, and more of less virulent organism, to cause the same response
What is a primary infection?
initial, acute infection
What is a secondary infection?
later (or second) infection caused by an opportunistic organism after a primary infection has weakened the host defences
What is a subclinical infection?
host has no apparent symptoms
What is a nosocomial infection?
acquired at a hospital
What organisms cause local infection
non-invasive organism
What organisms cause systemic infection?
invasive organisms
