bacteria and viruses Flashcards
what is a prokaryote
an organism that consists of a single cell that does not have a nucleus
binary fission
a form of asexual reproduction in single-celled organisms by which one cell divides into two cells of the same size.
endospore
a thick walled protective spore that forms inside a bacteria cell and resists harsh conditions
bacilli
are rod shaped. they have a large surface area which helps them take in nutrients but a large surface area can cause them to dry out easily
cocci
are spherical they don’t dry out as quickly as bacilli
spirilla
are long and spiral shaped they use flagella at both ends to move like a corkscrew
bioremeditation
the biological treatment of hazardous waste by living orgnisms
antibiotic
medicine used to kill bacteria and other microorganisms
pathogenic bacteria
bacteria that cause diseases
virus
a microscopic particle that gets inside a cell and often destroys the cell
host
an organism from which a parasite takes food or shelter
Nitrogen fixation
the chemical processes by which atmospheric nitrogen is assimilated into organic compounds, especially by certain microorganisms as part of the nitrogen cycle.
