bacteria and virus Flashcards
prokaryote
an organism that consists of a single cell that doesn’t have a nucleus.
bacilli
rod shaped bacteria, has a large surface area that helps take in nutrients but can also cause them to dry out more easily.
cocci
spherical shaped bacteria, don’t dry out as easily as a rod shaped bacteria.
spirilla
long, spiral shaped bacteria, use flagella to move like a corkscrew.
binary fission
form of a sexual reproduction in singled-celled organism by which one cell divides into two cells of the same size.
Endospore
a thick-walled protective spore that forms inside a bacterial cell and resists harsh conditions.
nitrogen fixation
process by which nitrogen-fixing bacteria take in nitrogen from the air and change it to a form that plants can use.
bioremediation
biological treatment of hazardous wastes by living organisms
antibiotic
medicine used to kill bacteria and other microorganisms
pathogenic bacteria
bacteria that cause disease
virus
a microscopic particle that gets inside a cell and often destroys the cell
host
an organism from which a parasite takes food or shelter
