Bacteria and virus Flashcards
Prokaryote
a single-celled organism that lacks a nucleus and other membrane-bound organelles.
Bacilli
a taxonomic class of bacteria that includes two orders, Bacillales and Lactobacillales
Cocci
spherical or round-shaped bacteria.
Spirilla
a bacterium with a rigid spiral structure, found in stagnant water and sometimes causing disease.
Binary Fission
asexual reproduction by a separation of the body into two new bodies.
Endospore
asexual cells that are formed within single cells and in hyphae, and seem to arise by budding
Nitrogen fixation
a chemical process by which molecular nitrogen, which has a strong triple covalent bond, is converted into ammonia or related nitrogenous compounds
Host
a living organism that acts as a harbour for invading pathogenic organisms.
Virus
a submicroscopic infectious agent that replicates only inside the living cells of an organism.
Pathogenic bacteria
bacteria that can cause disease
Bioremediation
the use of either naturally occurring or deliberately introduced microorganisms or other forms of life to consume and break down environmental pollutants, in order to clean up a polluted site.
Antibiotic
medications that destroy or slow down the growth of bacteria. Doctors prescribe them to treat bacterial infections.
