Bacteria Flashcards
Prokaryote
an organism that consists of a single cell that does not have a nucleus.
Bacilli
Bacilli are rod shape. They have a large surface area, which helps them take in nutrients. But large surface area can cause them to dry out easily.
Cocci
Cocci are spherical. They do not dry out as quickly as rod-shaped bacteria.
Spirilla
Spirilla are long and spiral shaped. They use flagelled at both ends to move like a corkscrew.
Binary Fission
A form of asexual reproduction in single-celled organisms by which one cell divides into two cells of the same size.
Endospore
a thick-walled protective spore that forms inside a bacterial cell and resists harsh conditions.
Nitrogen Fixation
Nitrogen fixing bacteria take in nitrogen from the air and change it to a form that plants can use.
Bioremediation
The Biological treatment of hazardous waste by living organisms.
Antibiotics
medicine used to kill bacteria and other microorganisms.
Pathogenic bacteria
bacteria that cause disease.
Virus
a microscopic particle that gets inside a cell and often destroys the cell
Host
an organism from which a parasite takes food and shelter.
