Bacteria Flashcards
How do bacteria divide?
binary fission:
Needs to grow, replicate all of the genetic material, and grow a new cell wall in the middle, when complete it allows the 2 halves to pull apart. Some divide once every 20 min if they have ideal conditions.
True or False, all bacteria are bad.
False
Do bacteria have a tail?
Some bacteria do have a tail to move faster.
Are viruses alive?
Viruses are not alive. A virus is a strand of genetic material inside a protein capsule. Viruses just zombify cells and do not meet all 7 requirements to be classified as living.
What are some characteristics of bacteria?
Autotrophic, cell walls are made of peptidoglycan.
What do conditions to bacteria need to grow and multiply?
Warm environment, with moisture, and food.
What do all bacteria have in common?
They’re all single-celled
organisms
How did bacteria make complex life on Earth possible?
By releasing oxygen
into the atmosphere
What effect do antibiotics have on bacteria?
They destroy bacteria
What is the most
common forms of bacteria?
cocci
What term best describes the function of flagella
in bacteria?
Locomotion
How are bacterial cells different from plant and
animal cells?
Bacterial cells contain
almost no cell organelles or nuclei
What is antibiotic resistance?
Antibiotics are a group of drugs that can kill drugs
What domain are bacteria in?
Bacteria are prokaryotic organisms that belong in their own domain called simply bacteria. Prokaryotic means that they do not have a nucleus containing genetic material and their DNA is scattered throughout their cell.
What are Microbe?
tiny organisms that are found almost everywhere. (Need a microscope to see) microbes include: bacteria, viruses, fungi, and protists. Not all microbes are harmful and can be really beneficial. Good microbes are called probiotics. Immune system can fight off many bacteria.
