Bacteria Flashcards
What is the classification of bacteria
The size (1 to 20 μm or larger), shape (spheres [cocci], rods, or spirals), and spatial arrangement (single cells, pairs, chains, or clusters) of the cells, as well as specific growth properties (e.g., aerobic [require oxygen], anaerobic [cannot grow in presence of oxygen], or facultative anaerobes [grow in presence or absence of oxygen]) are used for the preliminary classification of bacteria.
Where are aerobic gram-positive cocci located
Mouth, GI tract, Genitourinary tract and skin surface
List the aerobic gram-positive bacteria
Staphylococcus= clustered in groups like grapes
Streptococcus= pairs or chains
Enterococcus= single, pairs or short chains
Why can staphylococcus,
Streptococcus and Enterococcus grow on dry surfaces
This is due to their cell wall being cross-linked and thick
How do you detect these bacteria
The use of nucleic acid amplification tests
List the classification of Streptococci
Hemolytic pattern,
- Morphology of the pathogen and the transmission route of meningitis.
- Clinical symptoms and laboratory diagnosis of diseases caused by staphylococci.
