Backround Radiation Flashcards
What are the naturals sources of background radiation?
1.) radioactive rock
2.) cosmic rays
What are the man made back radiation?
1.) Fall out
2.) nuclear accidents
Where is radioactive rock found ?
It’s found in the ground, in certain rocks.
A place affects by radioactive rocks?
Cornwall
What is a example of radioactive rock?
Granite
What is cosmic rays and where is it found?
It is found in space and has very high energy particles that travel through space; crashing into the atmosphere.
A example of cosmic rays?
Exploding stars such as supernova.
How is Fall out background radiation created and how is it emitted ?
It is created by nuclear weapon testing. It is released radioactive isotopes into environment/atmosphere.
What is nuclear accidents and how is it background radiation?
Nuclear accidents emit radioactive isotopes from there being a accident at the nuclear power station.
A example of a nuclear accident that has happened?
In Japan a Tsunami crashed into the power station causing a big release of radioative isotopes.
How can your location and occupation affect your dosage of radiation?
Like living Cornwall you will experience more radioactive rock.
Or Cabin crew may experience more cosmic radiation.
What is radiation dose measured in?
Sieverts (Sv) or Millisieverts (mSv)
