  1. Formed late 1600s/1700s
  2. New England states had the most illiteracy which led to an inferiority complex as the South thought New Englanders saw them as uncivilised.
  3. Slavery was less needed in the North. More farming in the South, higher demands for labour (more slavery).
  4. Separate cultures and colonial governments- not easy to unite.

A
  1. Southern tier.
  2. First used in 1969 and it became synonymous with the economic and political prominence that had shifted from the Midwest and Northeast to the South and East.
    3.Factors such as the warmer climate, migration and boom of agriculture industry allowed these states to grow economically.
    4.Southern California, Nevada, Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, Florida.

Rust Belt.

A
  1. Since the 20th Century- heavy industry as declined.
  2. Cities closer to the East have been able to adapt to diversifying or transforming their economies to focus on advanced manufacturing and high- tech industries.
  3. “Rust”- used to describe impact of deindustrialisation, economic decline, population loss and urban decay. Popular in the 1980s.
  4. Pennsylvania, Ohio, W Virginia, Kentucky, Indiana, Michigan, N Ilinois and Wisconsin.

  1. Conservative protestant christianity plays a strong role in society. Contrast with the religiously diverse midwest and the Mormon Corridor.
  2. Earliest use in 1924.
  3. N Georgia, Tennessee, Alabama, Mississippi, N Carolina, S/W Virgina, S Carolina and E Texas.

Political developments

A

Collapse of the whigs. Civil war.
First Republican country that survived- dec of I, articles of confederation- US constitution.
Two houses vote 9/13 to ratify.
Bill of Rights 1791- somewhat satisfies the Southern states, 1-10 amendments. 10- states’ rights.
Washington felt the document would last 30 years maximum before the need for change.
1820 Missouri Compromise- tried to balance the northern/southern states’ desires about slavery.
3/5th compromise- established in slave states.
1830 Indian removal Act- Jackson.

Social developments

A

80% plus literacy rate, well established universities.
Enlightenment- westward expansion and ‘manifest destiny’- Job of the white man to expand westwards and settle.
Push factors- persecution in Europe, coast lines became full- expensive- room, gold- economic.
Govt intervention- subsidised railways, 1862 Homestead Act. Impact on the Native Americans. Organised labour.
Trade unions- melting pot- discussion of female votes and abolition c1848.
